Overview

Seeking an entrepreneurial Managing Director to lead and expand its Japan business. The firm operates across 30+ international markets with a strong heritage in renewable energy generation, trading, and risk management. Japan operations have recently commenced, with core licenses obtained and an initial team of eight in place.

The incoming MD will guide the organization from early-stage build-up to a reference position in energy risk management, focusing on commercial growth, operational excellence, and leadership development.

Key Responsibilities

Commercial Strategy & Origination

  • Define and execute commercial offers tailored to Japan’s power and renewables market.

  • Identify and pursue opportunities with industrial customers, trading houses, developers, and retailers.

  • Leverage international networks and product expertise to structure and close high-impact transactions.

  • Continuously refine market strategy and customer segmentation based on traction and profitability.

Client Engagement

  • Build and deepen senior-level relationships with key clients and stakeholders.

  • Deliver customer-centric solutions through consultative engagement and creative structuring.

  • Drive the process from proposal through contract signature with speed and precision.

Strategic Growth

  • Develop a long-term roadmap positioning the company as Japan’s boutique energy risk management partner.

  • Create differentiation through product innovation, agility, and service quality.

Leadership & People Development

  • Lead, coach, and inspire a compact team of originators, traders, and operations professionals.

  • Foster a transparent, performance-driven, and collaborative culture.

  • Manage recruitment, performance, and professional development in line with local labor practices.

Operational & Financial Oversight

  • Ensure compliance with Japanese regulations and internal governance standards.

  • Oversee finance, accounting, and reporting with disciplined control.

  • Drive operational efficiency, automation, and data-driven decision making.

Requirements

Professional Background

  • Minimum 5 years in a senior management role within energy origination, trading, or related commercial fields.

  • Deep understanding of Japan’s energy market structure and regulatory environment.

Leadership & Soft Skills

  • Strategic and analytical thinker with strong negotiation ability.

  • Proven record of motivating and developing teams of highly skilled professionals.

  • Effective communicator capable of managing internal and external senior relationships.
